The three Shatakas commencing with Nitishataka and following with Shringarashataka & Vairagyashataka were witten by the same author, namely, Bhartrihari. He was a versatile genius. His work Vakyapadiya is a marvelous work known worldwide in the field of the Philosophy of the language. As per the legend, he was the king of Ujjain . After his renounciation, his younger brother Vikramaditya II was declared as the king. These three Shatakas depict three different tastes of life coverring the four purusharthas, i.e Dharma, Artha, Kama & Moksha.
